whitfield. okay, tropical storm earl makes landfall in eastern canada downing power lines, sparking power outages and it's creating dangerous surf along the east coast in its wake. earl never did make landfall in the u.s., so now some u.s. beaches are open again, however, there are still some dangers in the surf. our team coverage begins right here, we're covering this storm or what's left of it. susan candiotti is live from cape cod, massachusetts, and our jacqui jeras right here in the weather city, let's begin with you. >> earl is over the gulf of st. lawrence now and moving very, very quickly up to the north into the east. here you can see nova scotia, there's maine for perspective. the storm moves up towards new finland and then eventually make its way out of there and become what we call extra tropical. 70-mile-per-hour winds, that can cause a lot of damage. so even though it's a tropical storm, you don't ever want to say just a tropical storm, because still plenty of damage. there you can see the path of where it continues to go and pull away from the united states. some of the win

lucky here in the united states, our friends in canada won't be so lucky. earl is about to make landfall as a very strong tropical storm in nova scotia. so the most damage that earl will sprou going to happen take up this from halifax down to nova scotia. 70-miles-per-hour winds, but the storm is moving quickly. so by later today, the storm will be long gone. so what's next? september is the peak of the hurricane season. usually one storm after another. it looks like we'll miss the storm once again. this is a slow moving system, should be near puerto rico about five days from now, so we have plenty of time to watch it and there's no threat to the united states as we go through the labor day weekend. back to you. >>> overseas, they're still as cessing the damage this morning after a major earthquake in new zealand. it measure 7.1 and was centered on the south island just west of christ church, the country's second largest city. melissa stokes of tvnz is in christ church for us. we know there was certain for people trapped in rubble. what do we know about any rescues or cualties at this ho

for a good chunk of the country. as far as earl goes, earl is heading into canada as you push through this morning and into the afternoon. it's cool by the great lakes. but it's really generally quiet weather, which is a great thing for a huge portion of the country. take a look right there. as far as earl goes, earl has never made landfall, not once. it's been earl for about ten days and not a single landfall. not in the caribbean, not in our area. around nova scotia, wet weather for new england, wet weather, some spotty showers around the florida keys. wet weather brownsville, texas, i see some wet weather. overall, that's a good looking shot for the u.s. of a. enjoy the holiday weekend. here is a closer look at the weather for your weekend. >> all right, everybody. wherever you are, make it a great day today. no matter what the weather is doing. speaking of the weather, as far as the northeast goes yesterday, the eastern seaboard, we talked yesterday in the evening. if the worst part of your friday was the fact that a hurricane stayed 100 miles off your shores, that's a pretty good
